The Barons of Tang have been working on their long awaited debut album over the last couple of months and it is almost ready to unleash on the world. This will be the last chance to see the Barons perform in Melbourne before they shoot off to Europe for an epic album launch tour.

Catching flies and flights as the year Marches frogressively on

February 7, 2013

Need 4 reasons to march out in March? Here they are!

We play the Northcote Social Club on the 9th of March. This will be the farewell gig of our accordion player Carlos Parraga, who has been with the band since its beginning and has always had a great social and creative impact on the band. It will be an important celebration and pivotal moment in the band’s history, and we really look forward to seeing the people we know and love. We will put on a rip-snorter of a party to see off this wonderful man. Details of support acts and prices are still to be confirmed but watch this space, more info about this big night to come.

Next is a trip to NSW, where we will jump in to Frogfest and croak out at the Red Rattler on March 15. On March 16 and 17 will head up into the Blue Mountains to play to the Blue Mountains Music Festival, along with Arlo Guthrie, Gurrumul, Kate Miller-Heidke and a long list of other stunning music acts.

Hope to see you soon, and remember, our album will be out soon so keep your eyes our for teasers, plans and campaigns to get on board!

If they had known we were going to try…

August 19, 2011

“If they had known we were going to try, they would have said we couldn’t do it, and they would have been wrong!” This catch phrase was repeated many times during the last week of our North American tour. We drove 10,000 miles, travelled through 25 states, and played 35 gigs in 59 days, and met the most delightful . No-one could have guessed we could (or would!) do it, but here we are, back and hitting the road again!

In the next few weeks, we play at Yeppoon Village Festival, in Queensland, the Junction Festival in Launceston, Tasmania, and the final Bohemian Masquerade Ball in Melbourne.

That’s just the beginning – head to our “gigs” page to check out what else is coming up – can’t wait to see you!

Tour diary – week 3

June 16, 2011

Today a b17 “flying fortress” aircraft crashed about a kilometer away from where we were sleeping and in Chicago our trailer got stolen containing the better part of our back line (drums, P.A,. bass rig and a guitar amp). BUT!! Amrrrca being a land of contrasts, we find ourselves chanting to Frank Zappa’s “American dream” doing 20 in ol’ midnight blue enjoying the fine weather in one of America’s most stunning traffic jams.

No but seriously folks, the Barons of Tang would like to take a moment to mention the talented and inspiring musicians that we’ve met. First of all big thankyou’s to Di Nigunim (pronounced dee nigoonum) our touring partners and brothers in drunkenness, probably the most peace loving anarcho klezmer crusties you’ll ever set ears on and the guys we owe the whole organization of this tour to. Then there’s the Wolves at Glenrowan, a Ned Kelly obsessed folk punk duo that have ended up coming along for the party times and a few extra gigs, The Hail Seizures are a straight ahead punk busking band that use lead belly guitars, violin and a drumkit made out of an old suitcase to play the most energetic acoustic music I’ve ever heard. Last but not least our new friends Alas, Alas who make beautiful folky punk originals and even more beautiful vegan tacos.

Oh and ps you can download di nigunims new album @

Miss yuz!

Tour diary – week 2

June 7, 2011

Week two and things are beginning to normalize. The jet lag has melded in with the late nights and hangovers and has left us with the usual tour lag we’ve come to know and hate.

So far we’ve (deep breath now) seen our first beat boxing cowboy perform in Earlville Illinois, met and played with our brother band Di Nigunum (who we’ll be touring with the next month and a half) in a stinky basement in Sacramento, played at jonnie B’s our very first sixties diner In Medford Oregon, had our first bacon and maple syrup doughnut from voodoo doughnuts in Portland, stayed in the red house
in Olympia where Bikini Kill and Sleater Kinney used to rehearse and made their first recordings. There’s a band living there now called the Hail Seizures who are basically a punk busking band and probably my favorite band we’ve played with so far. Played Folk Life in Seattle. An amazing festival that’s been totally taken over by buskers and last of all, Boise Idaho where you’re still allowed to smoke in bars and where we met our most hospitable couch surfing hosts yet.

By the time you guys read this we will have smashed three nights in Denver, done a cameo for The Rocky Mountain Oysters comedy series, camped out in Nebraska with way too many fireworks, played The Hole in Omaha, burned our way through gigs in Iowa, Minneapolis, PrideFest in Milwaukee (w/ Salt ‘n Peppa!!) hooked up with our beat boxing cowboy buddy in Chicago, eaten home-made tamales in Kalamazoo and skipped the border at Detroit to Tangafy some innocent Canadians.

See you in Toronto!

Tour diary – week 1

June 1, 2011

Who’da thought that touring the U.S. with a 7 piece gypsy death-core band wouldn’t be that easy, I mean just trying to get through customs at Los Angeles Airport can take at least 2 human hours and I assure you we were not human when we got off that plane. So 7 sleep deprived, jelly like Barons have to sprint through L.A.X. at full speed to catch our transfer like some gargantuan cyber mollusk on heat stopping only to ogle at celebrities (some guy from E.R) and get x rayed at security.

So we made it to Chicago !!…a little late but safe and sound. We played at Widows Peak Music Festival where we were shown some of that mid-western hospitality by Chewie, Cliff and the rest of the dog pound crew {WHELLLP!}.

Then the tour really started , we arrived at San Fran Airport, and first laid eyes on our tour bus. She’s a Ford E3500 15 seat “YANK TANK” about 20 ft long and a good 21 fists wide, tinted windows and the deepest shade of blue you ever did see… like an avatar reading a road sign inside the belly of a whale. Anyway, her name is midnight blue and we don’t mind that the cd played don’t work we love her.

First stop Sacramento, for one of the smallest and most outrageous Basement shows we’ve ever play. The audience literally tore the roof down. Party time!

All this in the first 3 days whooah this is gonna be fun!! Stay tuned for more.

USA tour

May 18, 2011

Finally visas are all sorted for the Barons of Tang’s tour of the USA! Unfortunately this happened a week too late, and we have had to cancel performances at Tropical Heat Wave Festival and the Starry Plough – huge apologies to all event organisers and people who planned to go! We’re pretty gutted that we had to cancel those shows.

Now that everything’s been sorted, we can now confirm that the tour will now begin with the Widow’s Peak Music Festival this Saturday, which should be a really rockin’ festival.

We can also announce a few more shows for the tour – check out the gigs page for details. Spread the word if you can!

USA countdown

May 3, 2011

In the Spring of 2009, at This is Not Art festival in Newcastle, members of the Barons met members of USA Klezmer-punk collective Di Nigunim, and over whiskey and non-artistic art they dreamed about touring the states together. 2 years, and 5 chronicles worth of paper work later, this is actually moments away from becoming a reality.

While we still are waiting with bated breath for our visas to be approved, we’re going ahead and announcing shows for our USA tour, from May 13 – July 11. We’re very pleased to announce 15 shows, including 4 festivals, covering 9 states and a stint in Canada, with many more still to be announced. Keep an eye on our gigs page for more info on any gigs near you or your friends – spread the word!

Back from an amazing time in NZ

April 5, 2011

We’re back from our epic NZ tour. Our gigs included playing a beer festival in beautiful Nelson, opening the Dunedin Fringe, the Auckland Arts Festival and Titirangi Festival, playing at one of the world’s best pubs, the Mussell Inn, and performing 2 massive gigs to upwards of 5000 people at WOMAD, which blew us away. It was lovely to get to know more and more people over there, and get to know some old friends better. Many thanks and much love to people who came to more than one gig, or who told friends about us – we really felt the buzz build, and we were thrilled to sell out a show pre-sales in our last week!

We also had many adventures and lovely times seeing the country. We saw baby seals at Wharariki beach, we played at 2 breweries of great beer, we went on a natural water-slide on mount Taranaki, we saw black-sand beaches and were looked after by people who showed us great kindness and warmth. Thank-you to the Australia Council, for the touring grant to make this project possible, and thank-you so much New Zealand, we would love to be back soon!
